  • Christy R. says: I know people who want to live on base and chose to live on Fort Jackson. If you live on Fort Jackson your kids can attend school on post (Pre K-6th). Those schools are great.

  • Diane C. says: We are stationed at Shaw and we live in housing. They are in the process of tearing down the housing in stages and building new as they go. We are getting a new BX which is set to open on 17 November. There are two elementary schools on base. One for 2-3 grade (Shaw Heights) and the other for 4-5 grade (High Hills). There is a "primary" school just off base for Pre-K to first grade (Oakland Primary). Racism on base has not been a problem in my experience. The surrounding area is a little different story. I wouldnt say that it's adundant however if you're used to living somewhere were its not an issue at all you will see some differences (I am from the DC area and notice quite a few things that differ from my upbringing). The capital city (Columbia) is about 30-45 mins away. There are more things to do and see there. But everything you will need daily is provided on base or in the near by town of Sumter. Hope this helps : )

  • Adrienne C. says: I went to Crestwood when my family lived there several years ago and then it was considered a better school than Sumter High but it used to depend on which side of base you lived on for which middle and high schools you went to. Like Diane said the racism isn't too bad but you will probably notice it. Be careful driving downtown people try and do insurance scams (forcing you to wreck into them so they get new cars) this almost happened several times to us! The area is nice though and most of the people are very welcoming.. Get ready for some major humidity though!

  • Tiesha T. says: I can't speak for the base but I'm from that area originally and racism is off the chain. I went through way too much of it growing up. However you get use to it and learn to keep it moving. Don't let the racism ruin your experience the Carolina's are the best states in this country.
